“A british expat friend of mine married a Chinese girl in the UK, they lived in China and got divorced in a court in China, both parties were present at the hearing. Someone said their divorce is not valid in the UK, but I understood that the Family Law Act accounted for foreign divorces”

Fact

Yes, the divorce in China will be recognised in England, assuming it is valid in China. This is under the Family Law Act: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1986/55/section/46
